Wiki Guidelines

Your Wiki will be a major component of your written work in Astronomy. The entire project is worth 300 points, 15 of which you earn by choosing a topic. Your wiki can be modeled on the pages you see on Wikipedia, but don’t let that limit you – be creative! You are offering information in layman’s terms on a topic related to astronomy. Your coverage should be complete and fairly in depth. And a very important characteristic that you see in Wikipedia is links to other sites where a word, topic, or person is covered more in depth.

Structure:
You first need to choose a topic for your wiki. When you have chosen your topic, you should put your topic and your name in the appropriate place on the home page of our wiki (there is a table there of topics). Topics will be strictly first-come, first-served, but please be fair and refrain from taking a topic from someone who got to it first. (Remember, this is the computer age, we will find out that you did that.) This topic will be found on its own page of the Astronomy wiki that has been set up for us. You can learn how to create a new page by viewing the appropriate file in the “Wiki Info” folder on our Angel “Lessons” page. This is the page where the bulk of your work will be found. However, each page that is done by a member of this class should be able to be reached by a link found in the topic home page.
Topic Home Page
The topic home page is the page that gives general information about a broad topic covered by specific pages in the wiki. For example, the topic home page for my page on Mars Pathfinder is the page on Space Exploration. Several other students may end up linking to their main page from this topic home page. For example, a student covering the spacecraft New Horizons will also use Space Exploration as her topic home page. Other likely topic home pages for our wiki are:
  • Famous Astronomers
  • Cosmology and Galaxies
  • Our Solar System
  • Stars
  • Telescopes
I am leaving it largely up to you to organize your pages and to decide what topic home page your page should link from, but I am also willing to help you out if you are not sure. When you choose the topic for your individual page, you should also think about the topic home page that your topic will belong to and include this information in the table on the Wiki Home page.
You will need to also devote some effort to constructing the topic home page that links to your personal wiki page. This page should be neat and well organized and have basic information on it. Working on this page will give you the opportunity to work with other members of the class to edit and construct this page. You may do this using any method you want, whether you choose to meet as a group and come up with the page or if you choose to all remotely edit the page. Remember that it is in your best interest to put some effort into this page and to make it seamless. It should not be obvious that several people worked on it. This page will be worth 100 points of your final grade.
Your main page – your wiki topic
You should insert a link to your main wiki topic page from your topic home page. You can find instructions on how to do this in the Wiki info folder found under the Resources page on Sakai. As I explained earlier, you should aim for layman’s coverage of your topic. If you don’t understand what you are writing, do more research until you do and can write it in your own words. If you are having a lot of trouble with something, please feel free to come by so we can work though what is stumping you. Make your wiki something that you would like to read. When you feel that you have done this, you know you have done a good job.
There are some things that I expect to see in all wikis. They are:
  • A visually pleasing page. Work on your format so that it looks nice.
  • Pictures related to your topic should be on your page. You can put captions on your images when you add them. Please be sure to credit the source of the image (web site, book, etc.)
  • You may find a good video to add to your page, however, this is not required.
  • YOU MUST CORRECTLY CITE SOURCES ON YOUR WIKI. I think the easiest thing is to indicate the information is from another source by using a number, then listing the sources (with their numbers) at the bottom of the page.
  • A good variety of sources (not including Wikipedia – use higher quality sources). Try to get a magazine article, a book, and a website. This may be difficult depending on your subject, but try.
